Book Club

Occasionally, to share the fun of reading and to serve as a goad when my ambition cannot guarantee timely success, I will post books that I think we all should take the time to read.

October 2013: Winter's Taleby Mark Helprin

[The horse that will portray Athansor in the movie]

In honor of the release of the theatrical version of Winter's Tale, starring Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, Jessica Brown Findlay (i.e. Lady Sybil from Downton Abbey), it seemed a logical choice to begin our adventures with the greatest living novelist. WT is a rather big project (I abandoned it about 150 pages into it once upon a time when grad studies interferred) so 4 months seems a fair amount of time to give those wishing to finish it before the movie comes out. If you finish it and love it, his latest novel, In Sunlight and in Shadow, came out just a few months ago. But if you don't live in the fantasy world of Academia where summer makes a 750+ page novel a minor investment, I suggest you pick up The Pacific and Other Stories and read as many stories as time allows.
